Nanaimo senior taken to hospital after being hit and dragged by pickup truck

NANAIMO — A woman in her late 60s was taken to hospital with serious injuries after being hit by a pickup truck.

Emergency first responders attended the incident on Applecross near Portsmouth roads on Wednesday, Feb. 11 just after 5:30 p.m. when the driver of a 2015 Chevy Silverado pickup collided with the woman as the vehicle exited an apartment building parking lot.

Nanaimo RCMP Res. Cst. Gary O’Brien said they’re still determining how the incident unfolded.

“The driver was coming out of a parking lot and the victim, for unknown reasons, was trapped underneath the vehicle and dragged a short distance. The driver stopped and called 911.”

The collision at the Woodgrove Pines apartment complex was witnessed by several people, including a doctor who provided emergency first aid until paramedics arrived.

A BC Emergency Health Services statement to NanaimoNewsNOW reported the pedestrian was taken to hospital in serious condition.

O’Brien noted the driver, a man in his late 60s, remained on scene and cooperated with police.

Mounties are looking for any further evidence to determine the circumstances behind the incident.

“We’re looking for video cameras and any other witnesses. The vehicle was also seized and we’ll be looking at a mechanical inspection on that.”

Police paint markings and other debris were clearly visible on the roadway Thursday morning.

Thursday morning, residents in the area told NanaimoNewsNOW the corridor has become busier and increasingly congested in recent years.

A crosswalk improvement project installed near the Applecross Rd. and Calinda St. intersection in 2023 has done little, residents say, as a majority of pedestrians are jaywalking well north of the intersection where several apartment buildings and businesses are located.

The City has approved a raised crosswalk at Applecross and Portsmouth roads, with construction expected this year.

Residents along Applecross Rd. say an increase in vehicles traveling through, along with those parking on the road itself, is creating a safety issue.
