Clippers beat Express in a shootout

COQUITLAM — The Clippers trailed by multiple goals in all three of their road games in Chilliwack, Langley and Coquitlam but came up with three of a possible six points and a 1-1-1 record.

In the concluding game in Coquitlam, Nanaimo scored first on a beautiful Jack Rimmer effort but found themselves down 3-1 through 40 minutes.

Carson McGinley equalized the Rimmer tally and then the Express added a last second goal by Kim Elfving to end the first period and a last minute marker from Michael Munroe to end the middle frame.

In the third period Elliot Perreault and Coquitlam’s Tyler Chiovetti traded goals to bring the game to 4-2 in favour of the Express.

Then the Clippers capitalized on a five on three and five on four power play, getting goals from Perreault and Patrick Fortune to force overtime.

The game went scoreless through the extra session and Hayden Fechner notched the only tally in the shootout.

Nanaimo outshot Coquitlam 38-36 while going 2/5 on the power play and seeing the Express cash in on their only man advantage.

Despite the low number of power plays there were a total of 38 infractions in the contest.

The Clippers Rimmer and Nolan Dupont of the Express were both assessed game misconducts in the third period.

Each team also had a disallowed goal in a game that clocked in at three hours and 23 minutes.

The Clippers took sole possession of second place in the Coastal West division with the victory and host the Alberni Valley Bulldogs on Jan. 30.

Nanaimo is two points ahead of the Bulldogs in the standings.

The Clippers have a rematch with the Express at Frank Crane Arena on Jan. 31.
