NANAIMO — A local man couldn’t believe his luck when he discovered the lottery ticket his son had gifted him turned out to be a winner.

Clifford S. had just returned home from walking his dog when he was informed by his wife he had won $500,000 by matching all four numbers on the Extra prize from the Dec. 27, Lotto 6/49 draw.

“My wife scanned the ticket on her [BCLC] Lotto App, and I thought she was kidding,” said Clifford, with the winning ticket bought from a lotto kiosk at Nanaimo’s North Town Centre.

The Nanaimo resident then phoned his sister to share the good news.

“She thought I was kidding! She said she was so happy for me.”

Clifford plans to use his winnings to pay off his mortgage.

A couple from Coombs also won half a million from the Dec. 23 Lotto Max draw, joining the growing list of well over three dozen tickets purchased locally to win at least $500,000.

In addition, Qualicum Beach woman Ann Maybee, won $500,000 in September through the same Extra Prize draw, while a Nanaimo man picked up over $213,000.

BCLC also reported a $500,000 prize was one for a ticket sold in Nanoose Bay for an April draw, but so far that prize has yet to be claimed.
