NANAIMO — The nomination period is now open for the Nanaimo Sport Achievement Awards.

Organizers are seeking submissions to spotlight the many successes on the local sports scene in 2025.

The nominations are open to any athlete, team, coach, official or sport administrator from Ladysmith to Nanoose Bay.

An online form can be filled out on the organization’s website until Jan. 10.

Award categories include age ranges from junior to masters as well as individuals, partners and teams.

Several special awards include the Sports News Story of the Year, and The Hero in You.

The Michael Rhode Memorial Award is given to someone who gives time, energy and commitment to sports and the community, while the Steve Smith Memorial Award is for achievement and dedication to extreme sports.

All categories will be decided by a panel of judges made up of media and other members of the sports community.

Previous award winners include Olympians Ethan Katzberg and Olivia Lundman as well as former VI Raider Andrew Harris and ex-Nanaimo Clipper Sheldon Rempal.

Nominees will be judged on their performance in 2025, with volunteers being chosen based on their long-term commitment to sports.

The 21st annual Nanaimo Sport Achievement Awards gala event is coming up on Feb. 20 at the Coast Bastion Hotel.

Full information on the awards and the ceremony itself is available at the Sport Achievement Awards website.
