Barrier realignment, shoulder repairs prompting day-long closure of Hwy. 4

NANAIMO — Work to fix erosion and restore the positioning of several concrete barriers is forcing a six-hour closure of Hwy. 4 on Wednesday.

Traffic in both directions of Hwy. 4 between Chalet Rd., on the eastern side of Cameron Lake, and the Port Alberni Summit will be shut down between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 17.

“Repairs to the shoulder and to fix the bank erosion next to the westbound lane near Cameron Lake will require a temporary closure to bring in equipment and set up the site,” the province said in a statement. “This repair will take place near the new weather station.”

Work is poised to continue in the area over several weeks.

They’re stabilizing the slope adjacent to the roadway with rocks to help prevent ongoing soil erosion.

A second closure will be required to remove equipment once crews complete work on site, however, the time and date of the closure have not been announced.

In addition to work on the roadside, crews from Mainroad Contracting will be realigning concrete barriers along Hwy. 4 in the same area.
