Flames destroy north Nanaimo RV

NANAIMO — Fire has completely destroyed an RV in the city’s north end.

Flames broke out just after 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 10 from a motor home parked in the 6600 block of Dover Rd., near Dickinson Rd., with Nanaimo Fire Rescue, BC Emergency Health Services and RCMP responding.

Jake Herold was early on scene, as he was driving by and spotted the flames.

“We saw a big fire and we assumed it was the house on fire, but then we saw the trailer, a little RV and from what we heard in Lantzville we heard a big propane explosion,” he told NanaimoNewsNOW.

Fellow witness Hannah Herold said on scene she noticed the sky had a red tint to it and had heard from her sister on the phone about the fire.

“It was scary because we didn’t really know what was going on, my little sister was near the area and on the phone with us, we heard the loud boom and she said ‘wow, did you hear that’.”

At least one person was tended to on scene by paramedics and taken to hospital, although the scope of injuries stemming from the fire is not known.

Nanaimo Fire Rescue assistant fire chief Troy Libbus said they were paged out to a structure fire call.

“Upon arrival…we had a fully involved class C RV, Nanaimo Fire Rescue quickly put it out. At this point in time I have no comment except for RCMP [now leads] investigation and have taken over the scene.”

NanaimoNewsNOW has reached out to Nanaimo RCMP for further information.

It’s the third RV fire in the Nanaimo region over recent days.

A propane heater is believed responsible for destroying an RV on South Forks Rd. on Tuesday, Dec. 9, while Nanaimo Fire Rescue also responded to a similar incident around 11 p.m. on Monday night at a Craig St. property.
