Nanaimo man with alleged large stolen hockey cards, collector coins haul arrested in Port Moody

NANAIMO — A downtown Port Moody roadblock netted police much more than an unlicensed driver.

Port Moody Police Department Cst. Sam Zacharias said a Friday, Nov. 28 roadblock just after 11 p.m. resulted in a vehicle driven by 40-year-old Nanaimo man who was wanted on a province-wide arrest warrant.

A search of the vehicle revealed property which police believe is stolen: including hundreds, potentially thousands of hockey cards and unique collector coins, Cst. Zacharias said.

“Some of them have price tags on them in the hundreds of dollars. I believe that there’s some exhibits that we seized that have price tags potentially in the thousands,” Cst. Zacharias told NanaimoNewsNOW.

He said the vehicle also contained “a large number of tools”.

The suspect was arrested on scene.

His current custodial status is unclear.

Cst. Zacharias said the suspect’s B.C wide arrest warrant was for breaching his release order.

Port Moody Police Department investigators are actively in the evidence gathering and exhibit processing phase.

“We’re looking into that and examining that, trying to determine the orgins of this property. There’s quite a few exhibits to sift through,” Cst. Zacharias said.

Referencing the complexity of the investigation and high number of exhibits involved, Cst. Zacharias said it’s unknown when police will be in a position to recommend charge approval for Crown counsel’s consideration.

If criminal code charges are approved, the case would be tested in court in Port Coquitlam.
