City funds ‘Clean Team’
The City of Port Alberni will continue paying $11,000 a month to a social service organization for a clean team in the uptown area.
This despite many service providers volunteering to have their clients clean their areas as part of being good neighbours.
Mayor Sharie Minions said the city needs a more consistent cleaning program.
“We can’t rely on volunteers day by day to go out into the community and clean up the community,” she said. “I believe it’s city responsibility first and foremost, and this is a fantastic way to do it where we are not only paying to have areas of the community be clean and tidy, but we are providing low barrier employment to members of our community who wouldn’t otherwise have an opportunity to work and earn a paycheque.”
