Three Nanaimo schools seeing ‘increased police presence’ Monday

NANAIMO — A trio of local high schools will have an increased police presence Monday.

Police and School District 68 officials report anonymous threats were made against Wellington Secondary, Nanaimo District Secondary and Dover Bay Secondary schools over the weekend.

Reserve Cst. Gary O’Brien told NanaimoNewsNOW parents and students can expect to see officers at all three places throughout Monday, Dec. 1.

“There has been an unspecified threat received, nothing indicated other than that. Out of an abundance of caution, we will have police officers at these schools. They should be there for most of the most of the day.”

A similar incident occurred in early October, with multiple RCMP vehicles stationed outside schools for two days.

It’s unclear whether the two incidents are connected.

Staff and police at each school continue to monitor the situation, but impacts to classes and student movements have reportedly been negligible.

O’Brien said any parents or students with questions should speak with officers or school staff on site, or the Nanaimo RCMP detachment.
