Mixed results after strong seasons for Nanaimo high school volleyball teams

NANAIMO — The end of November also means the conclusion of the high school volleyball season.

Four senior teams from the central island made provincial tournaments highlighted by two teams from Dover Bay Secondary and squads from Nanaimo Christian School and Parksville’s Ballenas Secondary.

Dover Bay’s girls team competed at the AAAA tournament in Kelowna while the AAA boys were at the Langley Events Centre.

Principal Geoff Steel said it was a strong year across all age groups for Dover’s volleyball program.

“Dover Bay is thrilled at the success of our volleyball teams that competed at the provincial championships. We have had a very successful season of play for all volleyball teams. Our provincial qualifiers have demonstrated a commitment to the sport and exhibited excellent teamwork.”

In both the Grade 9 and junior girls levels Dover Bay teams finished ninth at provincials.

They each won their respective district and North Island championships with the Grade 9’s winning the Vancouver Island title and the juniors finishing second on the island.

Steel said the Dolphins volleyball program is highly regarded across the province.

“We are thankful for the community support of our team including our coaches and parent volunteers that made these seasons so successful. Our teams are well known for their sportsmanship and excellence. All of our teams should be commended for their great work being ambassadors for our school.”

The senior girls and boys teams at provincials lost in the round of 16 at their respective tournaments.

The boys won their 9th vs 10th battle on Saturday, Nov. 29 against R.A. McMath.

Ballenas had their run to a championship end in the round of 16 at the provincial AAA tournament in Vernon.

The senior girls officially ended their season with a loss in the 11th vs 12th placement match on Saturday against Vancouver’s York House.

The A senior boys team from Nanaimo Christian were in Abbotsford and had a similar result, also losing their round of 16 contest.

They dropped their final game, a 13th versus 14th contest against Chetwynd on Saturday.

High school gymnasiums across the central Island have already made the switch to basketball.

Exhibition and league games for all age groups kicked off the week of Nov. 24.
