Projected Port Alberni tax increase starting at 6.91%

City Council received their first glimpse of the upcoming 2026 budget and 5-year financial plan.

According to finance director Andrew McGifford, city taxpayers are looking at a 6.91% budget increase next year, and $8.3 million in facility upgrades and repairs over the next few years.

The proposed demolition of the former arena, now the Industrial Heritage Society workshop and garage was highlighted by audience members as a cause for concern.

City staff said that $2 million cost could be removed if the IHS continues with building repairs and upgrades.

Budget debates will become dominant parts of council meetings for the next 6 months as they look to reduce the increase ahead of the October 17th municipal election.
