‘No excuse for going this quickly:’ man gets wife’s car impounded after excessive speed north of Nanaimo

NANAIMO — A local man has no doubt had some challenging conversations with his wife after he lost her car for a week due to speeding.

BC Highway Patrol officers witnessed the 48-year-old driving 177 kilometres per hour along Hwy. 19 between Nanoose Bay and Lantzville in the late evening hours of Oct. 24.

Cpl. Michael McLaughlin told NanaimoNewsNOW the Chrysler 300 was pulled over on the side of the road, with the driver handed a $483 excessive speeding ticket, an automatic tow and a seven-day impoundment of the vehicle.

“The trick here for this gentleman is he was driving his wife’s car, and we are obligated as police to let the registered owner know. That’s going to be an awkward conversation that he’s having with his wife.”

McLaughlin added in addition to the cost of the ticket and the tow, the family will also be responsible for an estimated $2,000 in high-risk driver and insurance premiums on their next renewal.

He also said the excessive speed displayed in this situation was dangerous not only for the driver, but those around him on the highway.

“It takes the barest things, some wildlife, an unexpected movement from another car, an unexpected pedestrian, and that situation will turn deadly. There’s just no excuse for going this quickly, slow down just go with the speed limit, you’ll have a much less stressful experience.”

BC Highway Patrol officers have a regular presence along local highways and have made several stops of excessive speeders in recent months.

Back in February, a so-called ‘influencer’ and their Nissan GT-R was spotted going 150 kilometres per hour in a similar area as this most recent ticket.

In July, a 23-year-old motorcyclist was removed from the road. going nearly 200 kilometres per hour through Parksville along Hwy. 19A.

And in April, a man running late to pick up his child was recorded travelling 210 kilometres per hour along the Nanaimo Parkway, near Mostar Rd., with the driver also failing a roadside breath test for impairment.
