QUALICUM BEACH — Town Councillors have signed off on a purchase being dubbed a “historic milestone” for the Oceanside community.

Ahead of the Nov. 1 deadline to finalize the deal, the Town announced on Friday, Oct. 31, they were moving ahead with the purchase of the 42.5-hectare Eaglecrest Golf Course lands, with Mayor Teunis Westbroek saying it was a “once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for our community.”

“Through the many conversations, meetings, and feedback we’ve received, it became clear that the community wanted the Eaglecrest lands preserved for future generations. We are proud to be part of this historic decision.”

Purchase price of the property was $8.5 million, partially offset by a donation from an anonymous individual who committed up to $2.125 million.

With the property now secured under Town ownership, staff and Council will move through several steps to outline future development of the property.

A traffic study for the area is expected to be completed by early next year, while design guidelines for the neighbourhood will be reviewed as part of ongoing discussions around the Town’s Official Community Plan.

Public consultation will continue through early 2026, including green space and trail planning, a redesign of the golf course and other aspects.

Direct engagement with neighbouring property owners will also occur.

The Town has also committed to additional public consultation opportunities on the final designs, prior to adoption by Council.

Much-needed housing is envisioned for considerable portions of the newly acquired property, however what the housing looks like will be determined through the consultation process.

Director of planning Luke Sales told NanaimoNewsNOW in July, the Town would work with developers in subdividing the property, provided they follow clear outlines and requirements.

“We certainly wouldn’t hand over any lands until there’s a clear vision in place and there’s regulations to ensure that when something’s built, it aligns with what our residents are expecting. It could be to the point of subdividing with design guidelines and maybe restrictive covenants.”
