NANAIMO — A man suffered a minor injury after the truck he was operating somehow ended up in Long Lake via the boat launch off the Island Hwy.

Nanaimo Fire Rescue (NFR) was dispatched to the scene, just north of the Royal LePage Nanaimo Realty office, on Tuesday, Oct. 28, just after 9:10 a.m.

Capt. Jeff Croft said a female passenger got out of the truck as it was proceeding forward into the lake.

“Her partner sustained an injury as he was trying to get out of the truck before it went in the water. He was transported to NRGH with a leg injury,” Croft said on scene, who confirmed the injured man got out of the vehicle before it went into the lake.

There was no boat or trailer associated to the half-submerged truck.

The woman ran up to the highway to flag down a passing motorist, who called 911.

“I’m not sure what contributed to the truck going into the water. It might have been a mechanical problem,” Croft said.

A cold-water rescue unit assisted in retrieving the truck, which was hooked up to a tow truck and removed from the lake.

Nanaimo RCMP responded to the callout.
