High winds cancel some Nanaimo-Vancouver ferries

NANAIMO — Strong winds from the first of a pair of fall storms expected through the region this weekend after impacting area travel.

BC Ferries announced Friday, Oct. 24 their 10:15 a.m. departures from Nanaimo’s Duke Point and Tsawwassen were cancelled, along with scheduled 12:45 p.m. crossings from both terminals.

The company said the cancellations were “a result of Environment Canada’s severe weather forecast for high winds in the Strait of Georgia.”

As of 8:30 a.m., no cancellations or service notices were posted for sailings in and out of Departure Bay terminal.

Winds are expected to ease Friday afternoon, however rain is forecast to return overnight and into Saturday, Oct. 25.

Saturday’s storm is not expected to be as intense as the one which began to hit the region Thursday afternoon.

Wind and rainfall warnings are in effect from Campbell River southward to Nanoose Bay, calling for between 40 to 70 millimetres of rain and winds of around 70 kilometres per hour gusting up to 90 in coastal areas on Friday.
