Clippers dealing with busy schedule, significant travel in October

NANAIMO — The Clippers are in the midst of their busiest month of the season with 11 games in October.

After returning from the BCHL Showcase, Nanaimo has a record of 3-2-1.

Assistant coach Evan Richardson said the team is trying to live in the moment despite a heavy schedule.

“It’s just one game at a time for these guys right now. We’re trying not to get too far ahead. It’s so easy to go oh my goodness what do we have coming up. But as soon as you do that you forget that today matters and it’s the biggest game.”

The Clippers next task is an 866 kilometre trip to Prince George to play the Spruce Kings.

They have a double header in the north with games on Oct. 18 and 19.

While that trip is long, it’s not the longest trek the Clippers will have this season.

Nanaimo will travel 922 kilometres to Cranbrook for just a single game in January.

The Clippers had some extra adversity during their BCHL Showcase games in Abbotsford.

On Thanksgiving Monday they were supposed to play Okotoks at 10 a.m. but because of a power outage the game was moved to Coquitlam Planet Ice at 4 p.m.

Richardson was pleased with the way his team handled the situation.

“It was a crazy day. It’s always the stuff you can’t see coming. Our group handled it really well. You’d think there would be a lot of complaining but there wasn’t. It was out of our hands. Everybody got themselves ready when it was time to play and we were really proud of the effort.”

As the schedule has gotten busy the Clippers have been integrating a lot of new faces.

Vince Kalscheur has joined the team from North Iowa of the NAHL and Jesse Venturo came from St. Michael’s of the OJHL.

Finn Kallay was acquired from the Langley Rivermen and Sam Boisvert has rejoined the team after spending time in the QMJHL with Baie-Comeau.

After the Prince George trip Nanaimo has another weekend away as they travel to Powell River Oct. 24 and 25.

The Clippers are back home again on Halloween night to take on the Victoria Grizzlies.
