$2.125 million donation going towards potential Qualicum Beach golf course purchase

QUALICUM BEACH — The vision of purchasing a local golf course for parkland and housing purposes has received a major boost.

The Town of Qualicum Beach confirmed they’ve entered into a conditional donation agreement with a private donor, which outlines a potential 25 per cent contribution to the purchase of Eaglecrest Golf Course.

According to the Town, value of the donation would not exceed $2.125 million.

“This extraordinary gift reduces financial pressure on the Town, preserves parkland for future generations, and demonstrates the depth of community support for this project,” Mayor Teunis Westbroek, said in a statement.

Purchase of the 105-acre property on the eastern side of Qualicum Beach is currently under consideration, with a public hearing scheduled for Monday, Oct. 6.

With a potential purchase price of $8.5 million, the donation would dramatically cut the amount of money the Town would need to borrow, and ultimately repay through taxation.

Dubbed a “generational opportunity” by councillors and Town staff, long term visions for the property include a mixture of recreation and housing developments.

A nine-hole golf course, down from the current 18 holes, will remain, with the rest of the land used for forested parkland, walking trails and housing developments.

Donation of the money also provides flexibility, according to the Town, on their planning with portions of the purchase potentially then sold back to developers.

“This donation allows more flexibility in development planning,” Luke Sales, Director of planning and Community development, added. “It eases the short-term financial burden and gives time for more consideration, financial analysis, and consultation.”

Purchase of the golf course lands has not been decided, with public consultation and other steps still required before any final direction forward.

Council must make a decision on Nov. 1, and if they proceed, further public consultation would take place in early 2026.
