Police presence being scaled back from two Nanaimo high schools

Oct 2, 2025 | 2:35 PM

NANAIMO — An increased police presence at a pair of local high schools will end ahead of the final day of classes this week.

RCMP confirmed extra officers stationed at both Nanaimo District and Wellington secondary schools will not be on site Friday, Oct. 3, after an “unspecified threat” was made against both locations on Wednesday, Oct. 1.

A statement from the detachment read the investigation into the incident is continuing, but both Nanaimo RCMP and School District 68 do not believe an on-site presence is needed for this incident.

“The investigation that was launched into unspecified threats has not been able to substantiate the information received. Officers with the RCMP Youth Unit will continue to monitor and communicate with staff at the schools.”

Police are not elaborating on the nature of the information received.

Students on Wednesday were monitored coming in and out of the building, with a limited number of doors open at each school.

Mounties do, however, want to speak with someone who called the detachment with information about the incident, but who failed to identify themselves.

“To properly assess the information, we are asking for this person to please call back so that their information can be assessed further,” Reserve Cst. Gary O’Brien said in the statement.

Police added no incidents occurred on Wednesday.
