Tour de Rock arrives in Nanaimo, marking midway point on Island ride

NANAIMO — The juggernaut which is the Tour de Rock returns to the Harbour City Sunday.

Riders in the annual fundraiser for the Canadian Cancer Society will make their way into Nanaimo on Sunday, Sept. 28, after stops earlier in the week in Oceanside, Port Alberni, Tofino/Ucluelet and major communities on northern Vancouver Island.

The group, and their support vehicles, will be travelling south on Hwy. 19 with a mid-afternoon scheduled arrival in Nanaimo.

Drivers in the area can expect slowdowns around the group, as well as some temporary intersection closures in Nanaimo to allow the cyclists through uninterrupted.

A fundraising gala dinner begins at 5 p.m. at the Coast Bastion Hotel.

The ride continues Monday, Sept. 29 with the Nanaimo to Ladysmith leg, with similar traffic interruptions expected along Hwy. 1 throughout Monday morning.

Tour de Rock wraps in Victoria on Oct. 3.

The event aims to raise $1 million towards cancer research and the funding of Camp Goodtimes, which offers an authentic camp experience for kids battling cancer and their families.
