Mayor Minions’ many meetings at UBCM

Port Alberni Mayor Sharie Minions says city council has been busy over the past two days, meeting with provincial ministers at the annual Union of BC Municipalities meeting in Victoria.

In a meeting with the Minister of Public Safety and Solicitor General Nina Krieger, Minions spoke about local groups working together to help those in crisis or addiction.

“So we did mention the coalition of groups that the City of Port Alberni is bringing together, all to speak with one voice, and start to bring to the province some specific requests or changes to funding formulas and an additional support for our community,” she said. “She was really interested in that initiative and asked to be kept involved in it.”

She joined many other small city mayors demanding provincial resources in battling ever increasing crime rates and social disorder.

“The coalition of communities similar to ours with higher crime rates, higher than average policing costs, often higher poverty, and inability to cover the cost of policing services,” she said.
