Driver in fatal hit-and-run of 90-year-old Nanaimo woman ‘panicked and then drove home’
NANAIMO — A local man is waiting to learn whether or not he’ll go to jail for a hit-and-run in Cedar, which left a 90-year-old woman for dead on the side of a road.
Justin Kenneth Nicholls, 27, pleaded guilty to one charge of failing to stop at an accident causing death in Nanaimo provincial court on Wednesday, Sept. 24, in relation to the incident in south Cedar last year.
Crown counsel Jordan Hauschildt outlined the agreed statement of facts regarding the death of Bertha Abma, just before 9 p.m. on Feb. 24, 2024.
A passing motorist found Abma unconscious on the side of the road some time later, between two driveways, in the 2800 block of Cedar Rd. near Bennie Rd. She was pronounced dead on scene by responding paramedics around 30 minutes after the crash.
