NANAIMO — Local Mounties are searching for a driver and vehicle believed responsible for a fatal hit and run.

Police were called to the 2800 block of Cedar Rd. near Bennie Rd. in south Cedar around 8:50 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 24 when a passing motorist discovered the unconscious woman on the side of the road.

“Despite the valiant efforts of bystanders who administered emergency first aid and first responders, the woman was determined to be deceased at the scene,” Reserve Cst. Gary O’Brien said in a statement.

RCMP Traffic Services and accident reconstruction professionals attended the scene, along with the BC Coroners Service.

Evidence suggests a vehicle hit the woman earlier Saturday evening but did not remain at the scene, nor report the incident.

“Police are seeking the public’s assistance in identifying the driver and vehicle involved,” O’Brien added. “Investigators are also asking for any motorists who were in the area between 8 p.m. and 8:45 p.m. on Saturday…to check their dash cam video.”

Police had the section of Cedar Rd. closed for over four hours as they conducted their investigation.

Information regarding the incident can be relayed to police via the Nanaimo detachment, by calling 250 754 2345.
