Parksville Curling Club wants you to give curling a shot during Launch Week

PARKSVILLE — Following the successful hosting of events for the 55+ BC Games, the Parksville Curling Club is now inviting the community to give curling a try.

Parksville Curling Club’s Launch Week goes from Sept. 15-20, with plenty of chances for newcomers to test their skills on the ice at the club’s Community Park facility.

Club manager Stephen Ewashkiw told NanaimoNewsNOW they started hosting Launch Week a few seasons ago as a way for their members to get some practice in before regular league play starts the following week.

“Also just to come in and socialize. It’s a chance to come out and have a burger and a drink and see your curling friends you may not have seen for a while, and catch up on what we’re planning for the club for the new year.”

Their members-only special general meeting takes place the evening of Wednesday, Sept. 17, but the ice will also be open during the day for anyone wanting to give stick curling a try from 11:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m., and again on Friday, Sept. 19, from 1 p.m. until 2 p.m.

Ewashkiw said hour-long open-ice sessions to learn curling’s basics will take place on Friday at 6:30 p.m., and Saturday starting at 3 p.m.

“On Saturday, we’re going to have a Try Curling event that spans a couple of hours, and you come in and do an hour on the ice with a coach and get a feel for curling. Those are free.”

He said their open leagues are open to any team formations, regardless of age, skill, or gender.

Parksville Curling Club is also introducing a new 2SLGBTQIA+ league called ‘Out On The Ice’, which Ewashkiw said is Oceanside’s “first queer league for curling,” which he said are the fastest-growing leagues in curling clubs in Canada.

“It’s nice to have a safe space for the really large Oceanside 2SLGBTQIA+ community, and we’re really excited to be getting this going. It’s on Sundays, starting the last Sunday of September, and it’s six until eight in the evening, and of course, the bar will be open afterwards for socializing. We’ve got a good connection with the community in Oceanside, and we are really excited about the future of this league and what we can do with that.”
