Police seek information after fatal motorcycle wreck near Qualicum Beach

QUALICUM BEACH — Police are trying to determine what happened leading up to a fatal weekend crash involving a motorcycle and a truck in Qualicum Beach.

On Saturday, Sept. 13, at 7:31 p.m., BC Highway Patrol (BCHP) reported a Harley Davidson with a custom skull-and-smoke paint job collided with an older-model Chevrolet S-10 pickup truck along Island Hwy. West near Mistaken Rd (just north of Chevron service station).

Cpl. Corporal Michael McLaughlin with BCHP said the female passenger on the motorcycle, a 37-year-old Port Alberni woman, died at the scene.

“The rider of the Harley Davidson is in serious condition. What we’re looking for from the public is anyone who saw the moments, minutes, or even hours leading up to this collision. The driver or rider may have been engaged in behaviour that you would consider suspicious, that may end up contributing to this collision.”

The bike’s driver was a 44-year-old Cowichan Bay man, while the driver of the truck, a 54-year-old Qualicum Beach man, was unhurt and remained on scene and is cooperating with investigators.

McLaughlin said so far they haven’t ruled out any criminality in the case related to impairment, speed, or weather conditions as they continue investigating.

“We don’t want to lead people, we don’t want to lead witnesses. You’ll know it when you see it…so if you saw any behaviour that you think might be criminal that could have led to this fatal crash, we need to speak to you.”

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact the BCHP’s Parksville office at 1-250-954-2953, file number (7001) 2025-1877.

The impacted portion of highway was shut down as a result.

There were two fatal crashes on mid-Island roads this past weekend, with the death of a 25-year-old man during an early morning single-vehicle crash on central Nanaimo’s Bowen Rd. early Sunday morning.
