Overfishing nets Deep Bay anglers steep fines

COURTENAY — Combined fines of $12,500 were recently issued to four offenders following a fishing expedition north of Qualicum Beach.

Min Han, Yun Dian Li, Zhong Qi and Guang Jun Wei were each found guilty and sentenced on Sept. 3 in relation to Fisheries Act violations on Aug. 4, 2024 at Deep Bay, court records showed.

All four were fined for one count each of possessing more than twice the daily quota of fish (oysters) resulting in $3,000 fines each.

Zhong was handed an extra $500 fine for making false statements to a fishery officer.

A statement from Fisheries and Oceans Canada confirmed the group was found to have harvested 212 oysters over the legal limit in Baynes Sound.

A judge ordered each of the offenders to pay the fines within one year after were sentenced at provincial court in Courtenay
