Porsche impounded for 144 km/h in a 90 zone north of Nanaimo

LANTZVILLE — A man lost his luxury car for a week after he was caught excessively speeding just north of Nanaimo

On Wednesday, Sept. 3, BC Highway Patrol (BCHP) members were patrolling the Island Highway at the Nanoose Bay Flats when a southbound black Porsche 718 GT4 RS was spotted.

Cpl. Michael McLaughlin said BCHP members noticed the speeding motorist, a 25-year-old Qualicum Beach man, zooming by near Hillview Rd.

“Our officers saw two motorcycles going rather quickly and well above the speed limit, but before those motorcycles could be pulled over, a Porsche went blowing right by them. So of course, the Porsche was pulled over doing 144 km/h in a 90 zone,” McLaughlin told NanaimoNewsNOW.

If the driver had shown a little restraint, McLaughlin said it would have been the motorcyclists facing fines and impoundment.

“Instead, this driver raced straight into the hassle and lost opportunity of watching his expensive car get impounded for seven days. Whatever his reason for buying that car, it probably wasn’t to watch it sit (in) an impound lot while he takes Uber.”

The driver faced an immediate excessive speeding ticket of $368, along with tow and impound fees, as well as high-risk driver premiums for at least the next three years, which could total up to $2,500 or more.

Speed is the top contributing factor in fatal crashes in the province, according to ICBC.

Cpl. McLaughlin said driving high-powered vehicles tends to lead to motorists pushing the limits.

“At BCHP, we routinely pull people over who fall for that temptation. No matter what vehicle you’re driving, the speed limits apply to everybody. You’ve got to keep it slow, or lose your vehicle to an impound and a lot of fines.”
