NANAIMO — Investigators are looking to the public to help advance their efforts to identify an individual seen skulking around local homes.

RCMP in Nanaimo have seen a spike in reports, from residents in central and south Nanaimo, of an unknown man looking into windows of homes, usually late at night.

Reserve Cst. Gary O’Brien told NanaimoNewsNOW they’re wanting to work with the public to obtain as much information as possible about the scope of these incidents.

“There’s not a lot of information to go on at this point, but we believe the same individual may be involved in some of them and there may be the possibility there are others involved. We don’t know at this point.”

Reports have been up since early August, but O’Brien wouldn’t narrow down exact neighbourhoods where the reports were coming from.

He said they’re not at the point where they can release any further information about the suspect, saying it was “too early in the investigation”.

“We’ve got members assigned to it, they’re reviewing the files, they’re looking for CCTV cameras, they’re talking to the people to see if there’s a connection between them, but right now it’s still very preliminary. We’re hoping with releasing this information to the public, it’ll move the investigation.”

O’Brien also said it was clear, based on reports to date, this individual was acting in this way with purpose.

“This person has been seen on a property and lurking late at night, obviously up to no good. This has caused concern for the public to call us…it’s a little different than somebody just going through cars, then they move on to the next car. This is somebody who’s made the conscious decision to go onto a property.”

Police advise local residents to ensure their doors, windows and gates are locked at night, and take advantage of exterior, motion sensor lighting where possible.

People should also report any suspicious activity to police by dialling 911, and review any of their security camera footage on a regular basis.

Those with details on similar incidents can call the detachment at 250 754 2345, quoting file number 2025-28573.
