100,000 Chinook forecast to return

Just in time for the Port Alberni Salmon Derby weekend, stock assessment biologists have increased the forecasted number of returning chinook by 20%

According to the update, 100,000 Robertson Creek Chinook are expected to be returning, up from the preseason forecast of 83,000.

4000 Chinook have already made it past the counters on the Stamp River, while 24,000 have been caught by the commercial, recreational and First Nations fisheries.

The Robertson Creek Hatchery requires 33,000 chinook to continue a consistent level of fry released in the Spring.

387,000 sockeye returned to the Somass system, just 70% of the target of 535,000.
