Victoria Quay to recieve upgrades

Victoria Quay is about to undergo a series of improvements thanks to a grant from the BC Government.

The City of Port Alberni and the Hupacasath First Nation have teamed up to revitalize the Whaling Canoe sculpture, aligning it with the river and building a new protective structure.

City Economic Development Manager Pat Deakin says the grant will allow for multiple improvements to the park.

“The funds’ primary interest is in protecting the sculpture and the Welcome Figures and making those more accessible to the public,” he said.

Deakin says the shed protecting the sculpture is falling into disrepair and has become susceptible to damaging weather and human effects.

“Because the shed was meant to be open, people are unfortunately and regrettably throwing garbage in the site and their garbage is landing on the diorama.”

They will also be installing one of the two automated washrooms gifted from the City of Calgary.

The Time Immemorial Grant is providing $148,000, with more than $40,000 going towards installing the washrooms.

Deakin says the project should be completed by November.
