Mid Island Pirate players bring home gold, named to Blue Jays Futures Showcase team

NANAIMO — Two players from the Mid Island Pirates baseball team came home with gold medals from the Canada Games in Newfoundland this past week.

Nanaimo-born Tyler McWhinnie and Madden Peters of Lantzville were part of Team BC, which captured the gold medal after defeating Team Quebec on Saturday, Aug. 16.

Pirates head coach Larson Bauck said making Team BC and coming away with the top prize is a “big testament” to how good these players are.

“Tyler started the final game, he was good to go. He was so good he threw the ball well enough to win. A great experience for both of them to go to the Canada Cup, and obviously, just to make Team BC is a feather in their cap.”

The pair, along with fellow Pirate Ryland Peters, were also named to the roster for the Toronto Blue Jays Futures Showcase, happening from Sept. 16-19 at Rogers Centre in Toronto.

Bauck said these accolades continue to highlight the high level of talent coming from their organization.

“This is our first year where we have more than one…when it comes to Team BC and our upper echelon talents, there’s a couple of kids you could have taken right there and nobody would have batted an eye.”

Fall ball for the Pirates starts on Sept. 2 with an open tryout, with around a dozen games taking place before the roster is finalized for their 2026 British Columbia Premier Baseball League season.
