PARKSVILLE — Large crowds will funnel into Parksville’s waterfront for a fireworks display, marking the unofficial close to local summer tradition.

The Quality Foods Festival of Lights will see fireworks launched from a barge in Parksville Bay on the evening of Saturday, Aug. 16 at dusk at around 9:30 p.m.

Saturday night’s fireworks display at Community Park includes a simulcast of the show playing on 88.5 FM The Beach.

Events conclude on Sunday, Aug. 17 for the annual five-and-a-half-week Parksville Beach Festival, featuring a world-class sand sculpting competition and exhibition.

A free children’s sandcastle competition happens on Sunday, with registration between 8 a.m and 9:45 a.m followed by the competition starting at 10 a.m. in various age categories 12-years-old and younger.

Open daily from July 14 to Aug. 17, 22 sand sculptures from artists around the world are standing in a gated competition area.

Typically, well over 100,000 people view the sculptures, while entertainment and numerous other activities in Community Park complement the popular festival, serving as a key local economic generator and philanthropic event.
