NANAIMO — A Nanaimo doctor known for his work in palliative care was recently awarded the province’s highest honour: being named to the Order of British Columbia.

Considered a pioneer in palliative care on the mid-Island, Dr. Robin Love has been a well-known and highly respected physician since he began working in Nanaimo 26 years ago.

In a news release, the BC Government said Dr. Love was being honoured for “his visionary leadership and mentorship, while transforming palliative care and inspiring a global standard of compassionate, equitable end-of-life care.”

He’s also recognized as an enthusiastic and passionate educator, helping to train hundreds of healthcare professionals through the University of BC, the University of Victoria, and international programs.

In the early 1990s he started the palliative care unit on the fifth floor of Nanaimo Regional General Hospital with a six-bed unit, which years later relocated to the hospital’s bottom floor with the now dozen beds still in operation.

He formalized a partnership in 2006 with Bhaktapur Cancer Hospital in Nepal and has made eleven trips to the South Asian country, teaching and mentoring health professionals involved in palliative care.

Dr. Love is a director of Two Worlds Cancer Collaboration, which supports various programs in Nepal which he helped initiate.

Now retired, Dr. Love also received a 2024 Lifetime Achievement Award from the Canadian Society of Palliative Care Physicians last year.

He was also recognized with an Award of Excellence in Medical Practice in May 2014 by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of B.C for his community dedication.

More information on Dr. Love and the 14 other people appointed to the Order of British Columbia can be found here.

The appointees will be honoured during a ceremony at Government House in Victoria on Sept. 16.
