NANAIMO — The 49th Nanaimo Men’s Amateur Tournament is underway at the Nanaimo Golf Club, running every year following the B.C. Day long weekend.

A practice round and long drive competition kicked off the event on Thursday, Aug. 7, with the 54-hole tournament running Aug. 8-10.

The men’s amateur is an individual stroke-play tournament playing 6321 yards with an overall flight and four handicap flights

Nanaimo Golf Club head pro Chris Wilson said there’s a strong field for 2025.

“Matthew Wilson from Nanaimo is the defending champion and currently attending the Weber State University in Utah, on a golf scholarship. Also, Jagre Knight from Parksville is currently attending the University of Victoria on a golf scholarship. There are also five past champions in this year’s field.”

There are 208 players signed up this year with many from Vancouver Island, but also from as far away as Hong Kong.

Wilson said putting on an event of this magnitude is a tremendous amount of work and a year-long process.

“For this tournament, there are a lot of moving parts. A big thank you to Al Jensen, the tournament chair and NGC club captain, and to all our sponsors and volunteers who make this such a fun and enjoyable weekend.”

The Nanaimo Men’s Amateur was converted to an amateur-only event in 1974 and has been held every year except 2015, 2020 and 2021.

It was originally an open tournament from 1970 to 1973.

An awards ceremony and dinner will conclude this year’s tournament on Aug. 10.

Details are available on the Nanaimo Golf Club website.
