Large group of poorly cared for animals from Nanaimo property surrendered to SPCA

NANAIMO — Thirty-three animals, comprising cats and dogs, about half of which are puppies, were recently surrendered to the SPCA’s Nanaimo branch.

A Tuesday, July 29 news release from the BC SPCA stated the surrenders were made earlier this month from a Nanaimo property with feces and urine found throughout the unsanitary home.

Eileen Drever, BCSPCA senior officer of protection and stakeholder relations, stated all the animals had flea infestations.

Thirty-three animals, including several puppies were recovered from a Nanaimo property between July 17 and July 21 (BCSPCA)

There was inadequate food and water and it was also obvious their basic needs were not being met, and veterinary care had not been provided, Drever stated.

“This is yet another case where an animal guardian became overwhelmed by the needs of the animals in their care, and uncontrolled breeding caused the already large population to grow rapidly,” Drever noted.

The puppies belong to a pair of pit bull terrier mix moms, which were included in the seizure.

While most of the animals are being cared for at the Nanaimo SPCA branch, animals have also been diverted to the agency’s Parksville and Powell River locations.

Adoptions for the animals will be available in phases, starting on Tuesday, confirmed Bonnie Pequin, Nanaimo and District SPCA manager.

“The pups will be going up for adoption. We’re moving them up to our kennels today,” Pequin told NanaimoNewsNOW.

Details about potential charges have not been revealed by the BCSPCA.

Donations to the BCSPCA’s Nanaimo branch, as well as information on adoptable animals, are available on the agency’s website linked here.
