UPDATE: As of 1:00 p.m. on Monday, July 28, the wildfire south of Nanaimo is now marked as ‘being held’ and remains two hectares in size. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

EARLIER — NANAIMO — Firefighting crews watching an under control wildfire situation along Nanaimo River Rd. have had their attention diverted up the road.

A week after a fire sparked along the roadway, on the north side of the Nanaimo River, BC Wildfire Service reports a second wildfire small fire started on Sunday, July 27, approximately two kilometres to the west.

As of Monday, July 28, the fire is measured at around two hectares in size and is burning out of control, meaning it is “spreading or it is anticipated to spread beyond the current perimeter, or control line.”

A morning update showed the fire did not grow overnight.

Three initial attack crews began actioning the fire on Sunday, as well as additional local fire department resources.

Two helicopters and three air tankers also responded and one piece of heavy equipment is on scene in an attempt to setup containment lines.

Based on maps of the area, it does not appear the fire is threatening any homes or critical infrastructure.

A further update is expected later on Monday from the Coastal Fire Centre.
