Montreal police investigating homicide in Saint-Léonard

MONTRÉAL — Montreal police are investigating a homicide that occurred early Sunday morning in the city’s Saint-Léonard borough.

A 911 call around 4 a.m. alerted emergency services to a man lying unconscious on a city street. Police found the man had an upper body injury, possibly caused by a sharp object. Attempts to resuscitate him were unsuccessful, and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police confirmed the death was a homicide, although the circumstances were still unknown.

The victim was a 52-year-old man, and his death represents the 23rd homicide in Montreal so far this year.

Investigators from the major crimes unit are now leading the investigation, although no arrest has yet been made in connection with the killing.

Police also reported that a break-in occurred Sunday morning around 4:30 a.m. at a residence near the scene of the homicide.

Shortly after, a 31-year-old suspect was arrested near the scene in connection with the break-in. He was interviewed by investigators and was expected to appear before the Court of Quebec on Sunday afternoon.

“The break-in could possibly be linked to the killing, but it is still too early to confirm this connection,” said Montreal police spokesperson Caroline Chèvrefils.
