Water advisory issued for Ladysmith’s Transfer Beach

LADYSMITH — High levels of bacteria in water samples collected from Transfer Beach is prompting a warning.

Island Health, via the Town of Ladysmith, issued an advisory late on Monday, July 7, advising the beach was “unsafe for swimming and other water-based activities”.

Signs have been posted at the park to inform beach-goers, who are being advised not to enter the water in the area until further notice.

Water quality testing is done in a regular basis, and updates are expected from Island Health in the coming days.

A similar warning was issued in early June for both Transfer Beach, as well as a small waterfront area in Lantzville.

In the Lantzville case, it was suspected contaminants from animal waste got into and tainted the sample.

Follow up testing two days after the advisory was first issued showed acceptable levels of bacteria in the water and the beaches were re-opened.
