Property tax deadline looms for mid-Islanders

Jul 2, 2025 | 5:33 AM

NANAIMO — It’s last call for regional landowners to pay their annual property bills before fines apply.

All mid-Island municipalities from Ladysmith to Qualicum Beach face a Wednesday, July 2, property tax deadline prior to fines kicking in.

Regional District of Nanaimo landowners also have a Wednesday payment deadline, with those funds paid directly to the B.C. government.

City of Nanaimo finance director Wendy Fulla stated nearly 49,100 property tax notices were sent out by the City this year.

Tax payments must be received by the City by 11:59 p.m. on July 2, noting postmarks are not accepted as a date of payment, Fulla noted.

“Property owners should also ensure they submit their Home Owner Grant application, if eligible, by July 2nd to avoid penalties on the unclaimed amount,” Fulla informed NanaimoNewsNOW in a statement.

Fulla noted 87 per cent of property tax revenue was collected by the deadline last year, while the 2023 compliance rate was 90 per cent.

Nearly 61 per cent of the projected $277.3 million City of Nanaimo revenue this year will come from property taxation.

This year’s property taxation rate increase for City of Nanaimo taxpayers was 7.8 per cent.

If City of Nanaimo property taxes aren’t paid in three consecutive years, then the property will be sold at the City’s annual late September tax sale.
