NANAIMO — Following stops with two other NHL organizations, Nanaimo’s Dylan Coghlan is returning to where he got his first shot in the league.

Coghlan, a 27-year-old defenceman, signed a one-year, one-way contract with the Vegas Golden Knights during the opening day of free agency on Tuesday, July 1.

His contract is worth $775,000, according to PuckPedia, a website which tracks NHL contracts and salary cap obligations.

Of Coghlan’s 112 NHL games, a vast majority were played with Vegas during the 2020/21 and 2021/22 seasons, where he suited up for 82 games, compiling six goals and 16 assists.

The 6’2”, 208 pound Coghlan spent the past three seasons with the Carolina Hurricanes and Winnipeg Jets organization, where he played 24 NHL games.

Coghlan has enjoyed success at the American Hockey League level as a reliable, offensively minded defenceman.

Last season, Coghlan compiled 12 goals and 28 points in 36 games with the AHL’s Manitoba Moose, the Winnipeg Jets’ top affiliate.

Coghlan defied the odds by signing a three-year entry level contract with the Golden Knights on the eve of the 2017/18 season as an undrafted player.

After playing more than 130 AHL games with Vegas’ then AHL affiliate the Chicago Wolves, Coghlan made his NHL debut with Vegas on Feb 5, 2021 against the Los Angeles Kings.

He notched a hat-trick against the Minnesota Wild the following month.

Coghlan and Matthew Wood of the Nashville Predators are the two Nanaimo-based players with NHL contacts.

Goaltender Dylan Ferguson, who hails from Lantzville, is unsigned after playing last season for the AHL’s Iowa Wild.

Eight former Nanaimo Clippers’ players are currently attending NHL development camps.
