Qualicum Commons saved after Town and School District work out deal

Jun 23, 2025 | 10:05 AM

QUALICUM BEACH — An agreement has been reached to allow a family programming facility to continue operating after the Town and school district stepped in at the eleventh hour.

The Town of Qualicum Beach and the Qualicum School District (QSD) officially signed a lease agreement to allow Qualicum Commons to remain open and continue providing their services, officially taking over operations as of July 1.

The future of the Qualicum Beach Commons was uncertain since the school’s board of trustees voted to close the facility last year due to high operational costs.

The one-year lease, with options for future renewal, will have the Town assume responsibility for the building and surrounding grounds.

Board chair of QSD Eve Flynn said they are pleased to partner with the Town to keep the building open and to continue providing a variety of educational, recreational, and cultural programs and activities.

“Collaborating with the Town allows the Qualicum School District to focus on its core mandate of education while seeking to keep a vibrant, accessible space for recreation, culture, and social services at the Qualicum Commons.”

The Society of Organized Services centralized most of its services to Parksville earlier this year, with the uncertainty of the Commons factoring into their decision.
