RCMP looking for masked suspect after knifepoint Nanaimo convenience store robbery

NANAIMO — Local Mounties are searching for a man who held up a highway gas station convenience store at knifepoint.

Police were called out to the Ruckledge Store at the Gas N Go station along the Trans Canada Hwy. at Morden Rd. intersection around 3:40 a.m. on Wednesday, June 18 after a man entered the store brandishing a knife.

Reserve Cst. Gary O’Brien said the suspect was in and out quickly.

“An individual with a knife walked into the business with his face covered…made demands to the employee. Money was turned over along with some merchandise, and the individual fled. We don’t know whether he left on foot or car, but he was not located.”

Police say the face covering is making a positive identification difficult.

Based on video cameras at the store, and the employee’s description, police are looking for a man in his late teens or early 20s, standing around 5’10” to 6′ tall with a thin build.

He was wearing a blue t-shirt and dark pants at the time of the robbery, with striped runners and a black baseball cap.

Dark rimmed glasses and a white cloth covered his face.

“We’re asking anybody who was in the area, especially if they have dash cam video to take a look at that. Anybody walking on the highway, any cars leaving at a high rate of speed, maybe a bicycle or motorcyclist nearby, we need to hear that because we’re starting fresh and we want to identify who this person is.”

O’Brien added the store employee did everything right in the situation to ensure their own safety.

“It’s a terrifying experience. Working late at night, somebody walks up to the knife, you don’t know what’s going on with them. The best thing to do exactly what the employee did, is comply with the demands and don’t attract attention to yourself.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact Nanaimo RCMP at 250 754 2345, quoting file number 2025-18526.
