Daytime closure planned for Hwy. 4 near Cameron Lake

Jun 9, 2025 | 9:49 AM

NANAIMO — Travellers bound for Port Alberni, Tofino or Ucluelet may have to consider alternate arrangements on Wednesday.

Work crews will close both directions of Hwy. 4 at Cameron Lake on Wednesday, June 11 from 9 a.m. to 3 for rock removal following a wildfire and subsequent landslide on 2023.

Recent falling rocks were captured by steel fencing put in place during repair work two years ago, but it periodically needs to be removed.

“Debris that was recently intercepted by the rockfall fencing next to the lake will be cleared to restore the catchment’s capacity,” the province said in a statement. “Geotechnical engineers have recommended this work to ensure the system continues to function as intended.”

No further closures are planned at this time.

Traffic in both directions will be affected and no detour will be available during the shutdown.

Rock removal work this past March shut down the roadway to deal with remnants from winter storm season.

Hwy. 4 was severed during the Cameron Bluffs wildfire in July 2023, which saw considerable debris fall onto the roadway from an unstable hill above.

It was finally reopened in August, almost two months to the day since the fire sparked.

The incident, along with repeated closures since, renewed calls for a permanent, alternate route connecting Vancouver Island’s east and west coasts.
