Cyclist killed in collision with pickup in Nanoose Bay

NANOOSE BAY — A 79-year-old Qualicum Beach man is dead after a collision between a group of cyclists and a pickup truck on Friday morning.

Oceanside RCMP report three cyclists were riding on Marina Way, near Carmel Pl. in Nanoose Bay at around 10:50 a.m. on Friday, June 6, when a Ford pickup truck made contact with the trio.

Two of the three sustained non-life threatening injuries in the crash, while a third died at the scene.

“While all of the contributing factors into this collision are still being determined, the initial investigation indicates that the pickup truck entered onto Marina Way from a side street and collided with the cyclists who were riding on Marina Way,” RCMP say in a statement.

Investigators say drugs and alcohol have been ruled out as contributing factors in the incident, for both the driver and the cyclists involved.

Police also note the driver of the truck remained on scene and cooperated with Mounties.

The area was closed for several hours as RCMP Collision Analysts attended the scene, along with crash reconstructionists and the BC Coroners Service.

Police are seeking any additional witnesses who have not already spoken to police. They’re asked to call 250 248 6111.
