‘More than a maze:’ Parksville Labyrinth gets detailed makeover

PARKSVILLE — A colourful and elaborate labyrinth located on Parksville’s waterfront was recently renewed with a fresh coat of paint and new artwork, thanks to dedicated community members.

Located at the east end of the boardwalk inside their community park, the Parksville labyrinth recently received its third renewal since it was first completed over a decade ago.

Mark Desvaux is part of the labyrinth team and said he first began walking it several years ago after his wife passed away to help work through his grief, finding peaceful inspiration from the images and words of affirmation.

“People call it a maze, but it’s a bit more than a maze. People use it for many, many different reasons. A lot of people use it for pain meditation. A lot of doctors are saying that walking meditation is one of the best things you can do…combining exercise with meditation.”

The official unveiling of the labyrinth’s new artwork, known as ‘Opening New Pathways,’ takes place on Saturday, June 7, at 11:00 a.m., with the community invited to celebrate the over 2,500 hours of work put into its latest renewal.

Desvaux said local educator and lead artist Crystal Bee came up with the idea to include an ocean around the labyrinth’s perimeter, and wanted community members of all ages and skill levels to add their own touch.

Using several large stencils of sea animals, people added to the design using chalk, with a skilled artist following up to paint the finer details.

“We had a baby of nine months old, a little tiny toddler who was holding a paintbrush with his mother just adding their little bit, next to a lady who was 93, who was painting the world ‘Believe in your Dreams’ as one of the words of affirmation.”

Desvaux encourages everyone to come and walk the labyrinth as it inspires locals and tourists alike, with some visitors saying they want to bring the idea back to their communities.

“The deeper thing here is this is something we can all do, we can take part in, we can use every day, and it’s something we can do which is proactive and helps us get out some of the worries that we all have with the bigger things going on with the world headlines.”
