Uber launching in Nanaimo & across B.C. next week

NANAIMO — One of the world’s most popular ride sharing platforms is finally arriving on central Vancouver Island.

Uber announced it will begin service across B.C., including in Nanaimo and Oceanside, on Wednesday, May 28, marking a major expansion of its operation in the province with previous service only available through the Lower Mainland and other select communities.

The move follows a November 2024 announcement which indicated the expansion would come in “early 2025” with the volume of rides available dependant on the number of drivers signed up.

A spokesperson for the company was unable to provide specific driver registration numbers for Nanaimo and the surrounding area, but stated: “At launch, ride availability may vary depending on the number of drivers in that area, but we’ll be growing every day and always looking for more to join the road.”

Recruitment of drivers continues, with incentives being offered by Uber for “eligible drivers who complete their profile and take 10 trips within the first four weeks.”

Uber will be the second ride sharing company to enter the Nanaimo market.

Uride launched in 2022 in a similar fashion with a staged rollout in more densely populated areas, before moving into regional centres.

Multiple taxi companies also operate in both Nanaimo and Oceanside.

Uber CEO Michael van Hemmen told NanaimoNewsNOW in November ride pricing will differ from rates in Vancouver, but they hope name recognition from their global footprint will help them in the local market.

“Individuals who are coming from large cities across Canada and internationally open the app and we’re the first look, so there will be opportunities for drivers to make more money if they sign up with Uber. Similarly for riders, it’s great to have competition in a market and to have more options.”

Expansion of the service is being seen as a win by both Mothers Against Drink Driving Canada and the B.C. Restaurant and Foodservices Association, who see the service as a way to ensure a safe ride home for those enjoying a night out or working at late-night establishments.

Information on driver registration is available on the Uber Canada website.

Ride sharing in the province is regulated by the Passenger Transportation Board, which also licenses and regulates taxis, limousines, shuttles, and inter-city buses in B.C.
