VIMX Motocross racing comes to the Wastelands in Nanaimo

NANAIMO — Part two of the Vancouver Island Motocross series is the first Nanaimo race in 2025.

Nanaimo Motocross Association president Darryl Lenko said the two day event begins with registration and a practice early in the morning of May 10.

“The practice concludes around noon. Moto starts between 12:30 pm and 1 p.m. and ends about 5 p.m. Then Sunday we get right back at it for Moto two starting at 8:15 a.m. and finishing at 2 p.m.”

The VIMX has a long history in the central and north island.

“It’s been around for twenty plus years supporting the motocross community on the island,” Lenko said. “Currently we have ten rounds in this series this year. Races are also in Port Alberni, Campbell River and Port McNeill. Nanaimo hosts three rounds. Round four is June 7^th and 8^th and round nine is October 4^th and 5^th.”

According to Lenko quite a few local riders showed well in the first race in Port Alberni.

“All these riders put their heart into this sport. For example Lincoln Gray is on fire out of the gate. He’s just turning ten but he rides like a seasoned veteran. His older brother and his dad also race. Chris Wiltsey is a winner who always puts himself in a position to be on the podium. Steve Widner puts in the work and is always in the hunt. Rylan Sorrie is from Victoria but he’s a member of the Nanaimo Motocross Association. Then there’s a lot of season riders in their forties and fifties.”

Membership with the Nanaimo Motocross Association is at 400 with about 100 competitive racers. The weather in Nanaimo gives locals an advantage for training.

“Our track is available 12 months of the year weather dependent. Many racers start their training in January which is unique to the rest of Canada.
