‘Chance for us to showcase what we do:’ Nanaimo RCMP open house returns Saturday

NANAIMO — It’s an opportunity to peel back the curtain of the local RCMP detachment.

The Nanaimo RCMP’s bi-annual open house takes place Saturday, May 10 at the detachment on the corner of Prideaux St. and Fitzwilliam St., from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Reserve Cst. Gary O’Brien said they’ll have a multitude of displays and members ready to answer questions and show off their skills and training.

“It’s a chance for us to showcase what we do for the public and have our members interact with the public on a different level. People probably aren’t aware of the number of assets we use on a regular basis to assist with operational or administrative files.”

The event is held every second year.

Members from the Emergency Response Team, who O’Brien said are always a big hit, will attend, along with tactical members in full gear.

The Explosives Disposal Unit are scheduled to be on site, as are members from Police Dog Services.

Volunteers with the detachment will also be in the crowd, delivering popcorn, candy and other treats.

O’Brien said they’ve had to make one change from their last open house, held in 2023.

“There’s no tours within the detachment this year, that’s a security issue we’re looking at. But there will be tours available for a police car that kids can crawl through supervised by one of our volunteers.”

The detachment is expecting several thousand people to attend the free event, over the course of the four hours.
