NANAIMO — A 42-year-old pedestrian has died after an early morning collision along the Island Hwy.

The incident occurred on Saturday, April 26 at around 4:45 a.m. when the pedestrian was struck by a vehicle near the Norwell Dr. intersection of Hwy. 19A.

Reserve. Cst. Gary O’Brien said Nanaimo Fire Rescue, BC Emergency Health Services and RCMP attended.

“It appears from independent witnesses that the driver was proceeding northbound on Hwy. 19A when the individual walked across the intersection.”

O’Brien said the person was walking westbound, from Norwell Dr. towards Jingle Pot Rd.

He said there were no signs of impairment or criminality to the driver.

Both lanes of the Island Hwy. were closed for several hours, with the southbound lane reopening to traffic by 9 a.m. and both lanes reopening by 11 a.m.

O’Brien said police investigators were on scene for most of the morning, including RCMP Collision Analysts.

The investigation into the circumstances around the incident is continuing.

“We’re looking for any independent evidence, or dash cam video from anyone who was in the area.”

O’Brien was unable to comment on what the victim was wearing at the time of the crash.
