Direct Nanaimo-Toronto service returning to YCD

NANAIMO — A popular seasonal service is returning to the mid-Island this summer.

Air Canada will add a non-stop flight between Nanaimo Airport and Toronto’s Pearson International, departing every Friday and Saturday night at 11:30 p.m., beginning June 6 and running through the end of August.

The inbound flight will leave Toronto at 8:15 p.m. Eastern time, arriving in Nanaimo at 10:30 p.m. Pacific.

“This route is a win for our community, offering a convenient, stress-free travel option right from Nanaimo,’ Dave Devana, Nanaimo Airport CEO, said in a release. “It supports our local economy, strengthens business ties, and opens the door for visitors to experience everything Nanaimo and Vancouver Island have to offer.”

Devana added the red-eye connection is a popular one for travellers at the start of their vacations as it means they can travel at a typically less busy time and use the overnight to get where they need to be.

The service will be operated by a Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft which typically offers 189 seats in a 3-3 configuration.

After debuting the connection in 2018 with as many as five weekly round trips offered, Air Canada was forced to suspend the service due to the pandemic.

It returned with a once-weekly flight in 2023 but was not offered in 2024.

Devana said in 2024 he was confident the service would return, noting “it’s just a matter of time.”

“The airlines lost a lot of money during the pandemic, they’re pulling back and are focused on their key markets and their key markets are getting people to Vancouver to somewhere else,” Devana told NanaimoNewsNOW.

The airport is hopeful this route will be as beneficial to those looking to leave Vancouver Island for work or holidays, as much as it is bringing people to the region.

“Nanaimo’s coastal charm and outdoor adventures make it a perfect summer getaway for Ontario travellers,” a statement from the airport read. “At the same time, Nanaimo residents have a direct path to experience Toronto’s world-class attractions, business hubs, and cultural festivals.”

Bookings are available through the Air Canada website.
