Final list of candidates confirmed by Elections Canada

NANAIMO — An official candidates list for the upcoming April 28 federal election has been released.

As anticipated, the federal riding of Nanaimo-Ladysmith has a number of returning candidates from the 2021 vote, including incumbent Lisa Marie Barron of the New Democratic Party (NDP).

Tamara Kronis is the official nominee for the Conservative party, while Liberal candidate Michelle Corfield is also on the ballot, along with current Nanaimo city councillor Paul Manly for the Green Party, and Stephen Welton from the People’s Party of Canada (PPC).

Manly finished in third place in the last federal election, 2,186 votes behind the winner Barron, and 987 votes behind Kronis for the Conservatives who took second place, with the three candidates accounting for 81.6 per cent of all votes cast in Nanaimo-Ladysmith.

Voter turnout in the riding was 64 per cent in 2021, a decrease over the 2019 election when nine candidates were on the ballot.

In Courtenay-Alberni, which also represents Nanoose Bay, Parksville, Qualicum Beach, Lantzville and the northern edges of Nanaimo, NDP incumbent Gord Johns is planning to run again and seek a fourth term in Ottawa.

The Conservatives announced Kris McNichol as their candidate, the Liberal Party will be represented by Brian Cameron, while Chris Markevich will run for the Green Party.

Thomas Gamble is on the ballot with the People’s Party of Canada (PPC), Teresa Knight will represent the Animal Protection Party, and Jesse Musial is running for the Christian Heritage Party.

Advance voting will happen between April 18-21, with eligible voters able to register for a mail ballot by April 22.

The federal election takes place on Monday, April 28.
